Refuse – crews will be collecting refuse sacks and blue bins that are due for a due for a collection today, where roads are safe to do so. They will also be collecting refuse sacks and blue bins that were due to be collected on Friday, where safe to do so and if time allows.

Shaston Road – Pothole

DSC00839I am pleased to advise that DCC repaired this pothole on 24 December 2012 before lunchtime! Be careful on Shaston Road as there is a deepening pothole, which has water coming out of it and is getting worse...DSC00840

Gardening Club – Jobs for November

  1. Should you want to plant a new hedge or new roses for next year, now is the time to order bare rooted stock. This will save you a great deal of cash. If you need advice as to some suppliers, please speak to Pete at the next meeting.
  2. Once all the leaves have left your apple trees it is time for their yearly prune. Collect fallen leaves, not diseased ones, and either put on your compost heap or store in black bags. This will encourage them to break down and you will then be able to use them for mulch.
  3. Now is the time to plant tulip bulbs ready for spring.
Clean out and replenish bird baths and feeders regularly Tennis balls are a good addition to ponds, fountains and birdbaths alike, to stop them from freezing over completely.
  4. We’ve already experienced ground frost so all vulnerable and precious plants should be covered or moved to a safer place for winter.
  5. Outside taps should be well insulated, or better still, the supply turned off for winter months. We don’t want the trouble of burst pipes.

Dorset County Council’s Grasscutting Regime

Rural cuts

Accident blackspots in the rural areas will also be cut six times from April to October. Other rural verges, including dual carriageways, will be cut twice during the same period.

Additional cuts

Towns, parishes and communities can do additional cuts between our cuts but they should
contact us to ensure they comply with our safety guidelines and avoid overlap and wasting
resources. We are providing training to existing lengthsmen so that they can take on some of this work, as negotiated with individual parishes.

Conservation verges

As usual, we will implement special cutting regimes on verges the Dorset Wildlife Trust has identified as special.

Dorset Highways aims to eradicate Japanese Knotweed and to control Common Ragwort, but resources are limited for weed control so progress is necessarily slow.

For more information about the county council’s cutting regime, please phone/email Dorset Direct on T: 01305 22 1020.
