Kingston Lacey Picinic
Sunday 16 June (Fathers’day) 2pm for 2.30
This event is open to everyone. Please bring food to share, but drink for just yourselves. Members who do not have national trust membership, will be required to pay for entry into the grounds but once inside give your receipt to Jan, Pete or Jean who will then arrange a refund for you. (This will not include entry into the house).
There will be yellow balloons from the car park, guiding you to the meeting point as well as some committee members watching out for you. Games will be provided for children by Peter Jones, so that the adults can enjoy the surroundings in peace.

This is advance notice that next year The Gardening Club will be organising a Stourpaine Open Gardens event to be held on the 14th and 15th June (Saturday and Sunday) 2014. Please put these dates in your diary – more information will follow nearer the time.

Gardening Tips for April

This is the interesting month, when seeds sown so patiently last month or earlier start to show their little heads. You can almost watch them grow day by day.  Then when they are a good size, pot them on, giving each the best start in life.

  1. Shrubs you didn’t get a chance to prune in March should be pruned now, i.e., shrub roses, buddleia, dogwoods, willows, cotinus and after flowering, forsythia.
  2. Remove the faded flowers of pansies and primulas.
  3. Plant Dahlia tubers outside at least 10 cm deep.

Gardening Tips for March

Now is the time to get to grips with some serious pruning, but don’t get too carried away! Lots of plants need their annual prune now, including roses, dogwoods and many clematis.

If pruning is a bit of a mystery to you, look it up or alternatively phone Pete, Barry or Godfrey.

Pruning not only helps control the size and shape of plants, but also encourages better flower production.

  1. Lift and divide congested perennials, such as hostas.
  2. Divide clumps of snowdrops.
  3. Protect emerging perennial shoots from slugs.
  4. Sow sweet peas and hardy annuals in pots to plant outside later on.
  5. Plant lily bulbs.

Stourpaine Open Gardens

sunnyThe committee have decided to have another go at opening members gardens in aid of charity. To give everyone plenty of notice, as it can be hard work getting your garden up to scratch, or you may have an area you want to re-develop.

The plan is to hold the event over a weekend in June 2014, in conjunction with a Flower Festival in The Church.

All members living in the village will be approached to open their garden, members living outside the village will be approached to marshal and assist with refreshments.

Pete will be looking for volunteers to help him with the organisation as I, Jan , will be assisting Fran with the Flower Festival.

Gardening club – Highgrove Visit

You have all been told previously of our intention to visit Highgrove, sometime in June. This has now changed, after discussion at the AGM. A definite date of Wednesday 28 August is now confirmed.  The cost is £38 for return coach travel and entry to the garden.  There are still 6 seats available.

Annual General Meeting
Friday 8 February.

35 members attended the AGM, which was well received.  Sadly Martin and Mary wished to stand down from the committee and they were presented with a bottle of wine and a bouquet of flowers. They have been replaced on the committee by Godfrey Lewis, Joanna and Derek Gardiner.

The accounts are still healthy with a current balance of £2933.16p, these were accepted  by Josie Clarke and seconded by Mary Phipps.

The new year programme was well received and the intention to hold Open Gardens in June 2014 was announced. A meeting for Sub-committee was arranged for Tuesday 09 April.

MEMBERSHIP IS OPEN until the end of MARCH FOR 2013-14

Membership £5 per year, renewable 1 February running to 31 January.  Membership closes 31 March each year “with the exception of newcomers to the village.”

Membership entitles bearer to free entry and refreshments at all meetings in the Village Hall plus reduced rates at some other functions.
