Gifted a gadget this Christmas? Free and friendly help is available<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\n you have been gifted a computer or gadget over Christmas and don\u2019t know\n how to switch it on or make the most of it then help is at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\n are over 75 Digital Champions volunteering in Dorset libraries to help \npeople with computers, tablets, phones and more. Most have gained \nexperience from\n their professional careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around\n 21% of people are not confident using the internet – that’s around \n150,000 people across Dorset. And 70,000 of these have never been \nonline. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not\n everybody has access or the desire to use computers but attending a \nsession may spark an interest.  Many learners have bought a tablet or \nsimilar, because\n of the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carol\n and Allan Lander in Swanage, Dorset, were helped by Simon Parvin, \nDigital Champion based in Swanage. They attended as a couple at the \nlibrary.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carol\n said: \u201cSimon was very patient and helped me where I was having \ndifficulty. He explained things fully.  My friend recently bought a new \nsmartphone, I told\n her to go and see Simon. We were both impressed with his patience. It \nwas incredible. Before, I could get as far as putting the power plug in \nand now I no longer fear computers crashing in front of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allan\n had some knowledge of computers. He wanted to know about PayPal \nspecifically, an online payments system. It supports online money \ntransfers and serves\n as an electronic alternative to cheques.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital\n Champion Simon said: \u201cSo much in life now depends on using computers, I\n am pleased to be able to help people to get going, and to solve their \nmany and\n varied problems. It is a vital service and good to see people gain \nexperience and confidence with their computing skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People\n without a device can learn free of charge on the library facilities. \nThe sessions are held in a friendly environment and you go at your own \npace.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some\n Dorset residents say they feel excluded if they are offline and that \nlearning with a Digital Champion boosts their confidence and helps them \nstay safe and\n independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
