{"id":1890,"date":"2015-04-27T14:44:51","date_gmt":"2015-04-27T14:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stourpaine.info\/matters\/?p=1890"},"modified":"2015-04-27T14:44:51","modified_gmt":"2015-04-27T14:44:51","slug":"action-fraud-alerts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stourpaine.info\/matters\/2015\/04\/27\/action-fraud-alerts\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Fraud &#8211; Alerts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following alerts have been received from Action Fraud &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On-line Auction Fraud<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On-line auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist.<\/p>\n<p>The fraudster advertises on an auction website and gets their victim to agree to purchase a vehicle, making sure that all correspondence is done via email. \u00a0The victim then receive emails which claim to be from genuine payment merchants or auction websites which state that the \u00a0money they have paid for the vehicle will be held in an \u2018escrow account\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The email indicates the money will be released to the seller, once the person has confirmed that they\u2019re happy with the purchase. The email says that this will provide the person with \u2018buyer protection\u2019. In reality these emails are fraudulent, they don\u2019t come from the named companies and the bank accounts are controlled by fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>Protect yourself:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Always stay within the terms and conditions of the auction websites.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Remember that PayPal do not include vehicles under their buyer protection.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Meet the seller \u2018face to face\u2019 and view the vehicle before parting with any money.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Be vigilant of emails that purport to be from genuine companies and check the \u2018domain\u2019 name of the email address for any inconsistencies.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0If the vehicle is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity which is too good to be true!<\/p>\n<p>Also<\/p>\n<p>Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise agricultural machinery for sale which do not exist.<\/p>\n<p>The fraudster advertises on an auction website and gets their victim to agree to purchase farming machinery, making sure that all correspondence is done via email.<\/p>\n<p>The victim then receive emails which claim to be from genuine payment merchants or auction websites which state that the money they have paid for the machinery will be held in an \u2018escrow account\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The email indicates the money will be released to the seller, once the person has confirmed that they\u2019re happy with the purchase. Once redirected to a web page they are asked to fill out their card and other personal details. This is a spam email with links to a malicious web page that is being used to harvest personal details, possibly in order to access victim\u2019s bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Protect yourself:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Double check where the email has come from before clicking on the link<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Check your iTunes account for recent activity<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Consider contacting iTunes separately to double check your account activity<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Remember iTunes will not request your personal details via email or through attached links<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0If you have filled in one of the forms, do not use online banking until you have had your computer checked out by an expert.\u00a0 Also consider contacting your bank to make them aware of the situation \u2013 money held in your account may be at risk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following alerts have been received from Action Fraud &#8211; On-line Auction Fraud On-line auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist.
