Have your say on the future of mobile libraries

A consultation with communities and library users is being planned to help shape the service for the future.

The number of residents using the public mobile library service has declined over the last few years. However the home library service mobile library, which goes to residential homes, has remained stable.

And residents can already access library services in a variety of ways including online, through the home library service, the public mobile service and of course within the buildings themselves

Cllr Colin Jamieson, Dorset County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and growth, said:

“Although the need to look at the service has come from current budget limitations, it is good business practice to reassess our offering, help us deliver a targeted library service to residents.

“We want to understand the impact of any changes on our customers and by working with communities and the voluntary sector, we will try to reduce the effects that any alterations may bring.”

The council will be consulting

On maintaining the mobile library service, which goes to residential homes, provided by the council’s Home Library Service mobile library
To understand the impact of removing the public mobile library services in more detail and to look at overcoming access issues by:
- Extending the Home Library Service in partnership with the Royal Voluntary Service (RVS)
- Consider the opportunities available within communities to create access to library services and contact with other people through car-sharing, good neighbour schemes etc.

Details of how to take part will be circulated throughout the library service and via parish councils. The consultation will take place during April and May.

A previous consultation had already looked at the numbers of people using the mobile library services and services are being withdrawn from areas with low levels of use. This has allowed a reduction in the number of vehicles from four to three and avoided spending on a replacement vehicle which would otherwise be needed. New mobile library timetables will start from 9 May.

PR5339 – C13 Road closed to improve traffic management

Road closed to improve traffic management – 18-22 Jan 2016

The C13 between Blandford and Shaftesbury will be closed at Melbury Abbas for one week to allow the replacement of barriers in Dinah’s Hollow.

Currently Dorset County Council has temporary traffic management within the hollow to move vehicles into the centre of the road, reducing the risk to road users from the possibility of a landslip from unstable slopes.

The existing water filled barriers will be replaced with more substantial concrete blocks. This follows a decision from the county council’s Cabinet, earlier this month, to delay the process of stabilising the slopes in order to investigate longer term measures for strategic traffic routes within Dorset, Wiltshire, and Bath and North Somerset.

Cllr Peter Finney, the council’s Cabinet member for environment, said:

“Although our plans for stabilising the slopes in Dinah’s Hollow have been delayed, it is important that we maintain the traffic management for the duration until we know about any future plans.

“We have already had a good meeting with our neighbouring councils and will continue to investigate all our options.”

The week long road closure, in place 24 hours a day, will start at on Monday 18 January and finish on the following Friday. During this time the highways teams will also be carrying out some safety works to the trees.

Resurfacing Boundary and West Hill will take place in the spring.

Treatment agreed for Blandford Fly

A meeting was held on 4 November made up of North Dorset, East Dorset, Christchurch and Poole councils along with Public Health England, NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group, Freshwater Biological Association and local residents to consider the future treatment of the River Stour.

All partners agreed to continue with the treatment in the Spring of 2016.

The decision will now be reported to the Dorset Health Protection Network on 9 December who will be told that local authority and health funding arrangements have been agreed and that permission has been granted to treat the river.
