The Secret Gardens of Stourpaine – 2014
Supported by the Stourpaine Gardening Club

In a few weeks time about 25 gardens in Stourpaine will be opened to the general public. This is in order to help raise money for charitable causes such as the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance service. An entrance fee of £5 per day will be charged for each day but children will be welcome free of charge.

It is now eleven years since this event was last held and a number of “new” residents to Stourpaine will be joining in by opening their gardens.

The Secret Gardens of Stourpaine will be held over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd June 2014 when all the gardens will be open from 11am to 5pm. Visitors will be able to wander around our lovely village and have the chance to see a wide variety of gardens. Plants grown by a number of the garden exhibitors will be on sale. A picnic area is being set aside for those who want to bring their own picnic and teas will be available on each day.

If you haven’t already made a note in your diary to come along with your family and friends to this wonderful event, then please do and then join us on either or both days!

Stourpaine Gardening Club Summer Show Saturday 14 September 2013
The Stourpaine Gardening Club held its 33rd annual summer show on Saturday, 14th September in Stourpaine Village Hall. As usual, the event was very well supported by exhibitors and visitors. In total 49 classes were entered by 47 exhibitors who provided 265 exhibits. Special thanks must go to Mrs Jean Chandler for organising the show, Pete and Jan Palmer for organising the schedule of classes and the judges who gave their time to attend the show. Thanks must go also to all those who submitted their entries to the show.

Twelve trophies were awarded for a variety of classes and the winners included Pete Palmer (four trophies), Robin Clarke (two trophies) and Carol Cutting, Ruth Pearce, Frank Tomes, Gyda Warren, Barrie Waterman and Margaret Williams (one trophy each).

A special mention must go to Mary Phipps who donated the CAPTAIN TREMBLE trophy in memory of her late husband, Martin Phipps who was a committee member and a strong supporter of the club. This trophy was awarded to Barrie Waterman, the overall winner of the Painting and Drawing classes. Robin Clarke swept the board by winning all five photography classes. He would like to dedicate his success to Martin Phipps who “taught me everything I know about photography”.

Gardening Tips for June/ July

Bindweed, couch grass and other perennial weeds can quickly spread through established borders, so be vigilant and dig them out as soon as you notice them. Being careful to get the whole root where possible.

Don’t forget, that by regular dead heading you will continue to get flowers especially on sweat peas, roses, lupins and delphiniums.

Keep an eye on your lawn and should you be invade by daises and dandelions use a weed killer. If it is just the odd one try digging it out.

Water regularly but avoid the heat of the day. The best time to water is either evening or early morning before it gets too warm. BY DOING THIS YOU WILL AVOID SUN SCORCH.

Ponds and water features need regular care. Keep them topped up and at the first sign of duck or blanket weed remove it, as it soon multiplies.

Continue planting salad crops for a continuous supply. July is also the time to plant winter spinach, spring cabbage and turnips. You can also plant French beans and peas for a late crop.

Mound soil up around the stems of maincrop potatoes, to encourage better crops.

Thanks to the right weather and a bee population many of you may be looking forward to a bumper apple crop. Should you be lucky enough to have large clusters of apples, it may be advisable to remove some to encourage a larger apple. Keep a close eye on them and remove any damaged or diseased straight away.

Happy Gardening
