PR 3951 – Plans reduce impact of road closure

Preparations have been made to reduce the effect of closing the C13 at Melbury Abbas on the surrounding roads.

The major route between Blandford and Shaftesbury was closed by Dorset County Council following investigations that revealed the steep slopes were unstable.
The county council has been working with Dorset Police and local communities on the A350 and surrounding roads to reduce the use of ‘rat runs’ and remind drivers of the speed limits through the villages.
Extra Speed Indicator devices (SIDs), temporary flashing signs that warn drivers who are speeding, have also been installed.

Deborah Croney, county councillor for Hambledon, said:

“The closure of the C13 has had a significant impact on traffic travelling through the county.
“We’ve been working collaboratively with partners and Dorset Police to prevent and discourage poor driving behaviour along both the A350 and C13.
“The Local Safer Neighbourhood Teams are using speed cameras along the routes and working with local parishes to develop Community Speedwatch schemes to provide vital reassurance.”

Signs have been placed along the route to deter large vehicles and HGVs from using the smaller roads.
The council have also placed advance warning signs at Poole’s ferry terminal and ferry companies are advising customers of possible delays along this route.

Andrew Martin, the county council’s head of highways, said:

“The traffic data show’s that our management of the highway network is working with a reduction of large articulated vehicles using the A350. We will continue to monitor the roads and adjust our work accordingly.”

In Dinah’s Hollow surveys have already been carried out on the steep slopes. A mobile elevated work platform had to be used for some of the work due to the height and angle of the sides.
The next step is for boreholes and soil tests to be taken. These will be carried out on private land and some areas of crops will be affected. The council has negotiated with the landowners for permission to carry out the boreholes. Work is planned to start next week (w/c 30 June).

Dorset PCC – Community Remedy Consultation

Dear Resident
Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner, Martyn Underhill is today launching a three month consultation to give residents a greater say in how anti-social behaviour and low level crime is dealt with in the county.

The recent Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act places a statutory duty on all PCCs to develop a list of Community Remedies. From this autumn, victims will be able to select the punishment for the offender from a menu of options.

Community Remedies are likely to include measures such as repairing damage to property, cleaning up graffiti or receiving a punishment proportionate to the crime. Victims can also ask the offender direct questions, mediate or receive an apology. By bringing together the offender with the victim of their crime, it’s hoped they will better understand the impact of their actions. Community Remedy is a way of delivering justice without going through the traditional court process.

In addition to the online survey, the Dorset Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner will also be holding a number of focus groups to consult communities on what they’d like to see on the list of Community Remedies.

A message from Dorset Police

You may well have read in the media about the successful international operation led by the FBI that had taken control of the GameOver Zeus botnet, a network of captured computers used to steal millions of pounds from individuals and small businesses around the world. An infected computer can also suffer a secondary attack by a piece of malware referred to as CryptoLocker which results is a victims files all being encrypted. Once encrypted a message appears seeking payment of a ransom if the user wants to access their files again. This encryption cannot be broken without the password (or key) held by criminals.

Dorset Police is strongly advising computer owners, who may not even realise they have the malware, to take steps now to remove the infection and protect themselves from future attacks. It is estimated that the criminals will probably be up and running again in about two weeks.

Whilst, it is hoped that the owners of infected systems will be advised that they have of the malware by their ISP, Dorset Police strongly recommends that computers users go to:

and follow the instructions given to check for and remove the malware.

This warning is not intended to cause you panic but we cannot over-stress the importance of taking these steps immediately.

And remember, if you don’t make an effort to clean up malware from your own computer, you may become a victim or at the very least your computer will become part of the problem.

Ask Dorset

On 02 June 2014, Dorset County Council is kicking off a series of road shows all around the county inviting the public to come and tell them what they think is most important in the wide range of services they pay for through their Council Tax.

The council doesn’t want to stand still, and is ready to change as a result of listening to local people.

It’s even more important that they listen now, as like all public services Dorset County Council’s budget has been squeezed as part of the national austerity measures. So far the council has worked hard to find these savings and has reduced its overall annual budget by £60 million, whilst having minimal impact on front line services, and needs to save a further £43 million over the next few years.

The county council will though still be spending £250 million a year, so this is a real opportunity to make sure that the money is spent wisely, and to have the greatest positive impact on the things you think are most important, whether that is the state of our roads, running our outdoor education service and libraries, or providing social care services for older people.

We need your help. We need to know what you value the most, what is most
important to you and your family and friends.

You can get involved in lots of different ways:
In person at one of our road shows. Come at meet us, at our road shows you will have the opportunity to talk to your local councillor, a member of our cabinet, our most senior officers or even possibly the chief executive.
